APPEAL AUGUST 2013
Our New Trustee and volunteer Michael Nicholson has kindly offered to raise funds for our charity AGE CONCERN SOUTHEND
by climbing KILIMANJARO!
FROM AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TO AFRICA
Before taking early retirement from his role as Group Treasurer of NATS, the company responsiblefor ensuring that planes fly safely through UK controlled airspace, long term
Leigh resident Mike Nicholson set himself the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mike said: "I decided to take early retirement at the end of March and one of the challenges that I set myself was to do something completely different so I decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro at the end of August".
Since retiring, Mike has started doing some volunteering for local charity Age Concern Southend which offers comfort, friendship and practical help to residents who feel isolated or need support in
maintaining the life they wish to lead.
Mike said: "I also wanted to use some of my newly found spare time to give something back to society and decided to try and help Age Concern Southend which does some great work locally. I then thought why not combine the two and see if I could use my climb to try and raise some money for Age Concern Southend."
Mike is now training hard although the lack of hills inEssex has been a bit of a problem and has meant that he's had to use the Southend "cliffs" as a proxy for the mountain so if you see someone walking up and down the Cliff Garden paths and steps you'll know who it is!If you would like to support Mike and Age Concern
