If you wish to stop receiving 'cold' calls from sales companies, contact the Telephone Preference Scheme, tel 0845 070 0707 (calls charged at local rates). To stop or at least reduce junk mail, write for an application form to Mailing Preference Service, Department AM, Freepost 22, London W1E 7EZ.

Need consumer advice?

If you need to make a complaint about goods or services you've bought, contact the government funded consumer advice service Consumer Direct. www.direct.gov.uk . You can contact Southend Trading Standards Consumer Complaints, tel 0845 040506   

Do not buy goods at the door. If you have doorstep callers trying to sell you goods or services and you are suspicious of them, call the Doorstep Hotline, tel 0845 60 444 66 (calls charged at local rates)
