Sheltered housing provides an option which gives independence, but a greater degree of independence and social contact than you may get in your own home. Southend Borough Council provides sheltered housing, but demand is high. Housing associations also offer rented property. Private retirement complexes offer similar facilities, but normally you have to buy the flat and service charges can be high.
