Celebrating the Jubilee with Age Concern Southend

Age Concern Southend are thrilled to announce that as part of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, we have been awarded funds from the Arts Council’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund by the Essex Community Foundation.

The grant will fund Age Concern Southend’s Jubilee ‘SINGING FOR MEMORIES’ project to work with local musician ‘Musicality – Therapeutic Music Interventions CIC’ to create two choirs, the ‘Sound of Memories choir’ (formed of older people/adults) and a ‘Dementia choir’ (formed from our Day Centre clients) and ultimately host a FREE concert for the community at the Haven Community Hub on Wednesday 29th June, 4-5pm.

From Elvis to Queen and songs from the time of the Coronation. The choirs will perform songs fitting to the theme ‘Kings & Queens’.

The concert is completely free and there’s no need to book. We want as many people to enjoy the concert as possible and support our Dementia and adult choir in this project. We are also thankful for Southend Council’s support, who will project a recording of the concert at the Forum throughout July

CDs will also be produced and sold to raise funds for Age Concern Southend.

Elizabeth Smith, Community Engagement Manager said, “We know that singing is great for the mind, particularly for people affected by Dementia. It’s a fun, stimulating, social and rewarding activity that anyone can do…and our Day Centre Clients are certainly enjoying practising. They are really bonding over a shared interest and their eyes really twinkle when they sing old songs.

Our choirs have spent months practising to make this event possible and singing for 1 hour to the public is no mean feat for those struggling with Dementia. We would love for the wider community to attend our concert and support our choirs and the work they have put in.”

In addition to the concert on Wednesday 29th June, 4-5pm, we will also have a range of Dementia specific support services on site from 1pm and our Dementia Day Centre is open for tours.
